Penny candy stores. Spent fireworks littering the street on July 5th, and the punks we used to light them. Sitting on our stoops at the end of summer, the day before school started. Going to buy new school supplies after the first day of school. Shoveling the neighbors’ snow for money to buy track and cars for our Aurora racing sets. Revell monster models. Yo-yos and tops. TV dinners in aluminum trays. Fishing, great fishing, even in Canarsie. War toys. Captain Jack and Officer Joe Bolton. The Late Show. I miss Wonderama! (And Sandy Becker, too.)
I miss the simpler times and the good old days of the 50’s up to the mid 60’s. We grew up with the best entertainers in the world. The music, the movies, and tv were just so much better. Everything is cheap and shallow today. The golden age was a special time. It was the best of times period.

I miss: Sonny Fox, Mary Janes, Erector Sets, Soupy Sales, Movie double features, Saturday morning cartoons, Skelly, House parties, Airplane lounges, fishing in Prospect Park, Fasination& Playland arcades in Times Square, Palisades Amusement Park, Curly Joe Neil, the Bowery Boys, Dondi, Lil Abner Boots, ordering stuff from comic books, Easter Sunday at Coney Island, the first Labor Day Parades, Drive-Ins…
Wetson’s hamburger restaurants, ”The CBS TV All American Thanksgiving Day Parade Jubilees”(when the parade telecasts were hosted by”Captain Kangaroo & Co”, Peter Graves,The Bill Baird Puppets, Bob Barker,”Kukla Fran & Ollie” and William Conrad),The Annual CBS TV Broadcasts of “The Wizard Of Oz”(Which were hosted by Dick Van Dyke and Danny Kaye),The annual TV broadcasts of The NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parades (Hosted by “Mr. Ireland USA, Jack McCarthy),Drake’s Snack Cakes, ”Good Humor Ice Cream” and the people who sold them, wearing white uniform and caps. I miss the truly unique and special toys that The original FAO Schwartz (The place at E.58th Street and 5th Ave) use to sell, including The Pelham Puppets…and their special Christmas Toys catalogue.
What I miss from NY or my childhood their? HMMMM… i miss watching the parade of shoppers from my third floor window in brooklyn, pulling their carts behind them. I miss waiting to hear the bells of the Good Humor man’s truck and run screaming down the street “waaaaaaiiiiiitttttttt!!!!!”. I miss hit the penny, skelly, box ball, red light green light, statues. A my name is Alice, with a pensy pinky ball. I miss Chatty Cathy, my barbie dream house with the cardboard records on the turntable, my EZ Bake oven and the cakes it produced. Ebingers bakery and their blackout cake. Lime Rickeys with my mother at the counter of the luncheonette. The 5&10 with the nickel horse rides outside. the Good Humor man’s truck and run screaming down the street “waaaaaaiiiiiitttttttt!!!!!”. Tuesday night fireworks watched from the roof of my apartment bldg in Brooklyn. Taking a special trip into NYC to eat at Wah-Kee restaurant on Mott Street. Jahns Ice Cream Parlor….Waiting at the turnstiles for my dad to get off the D train every night….Captain Kangaroo and the ping pong balls falling. Hanna Barbera cartoons. Waiting in vain for my name to be called on Romper Room…..i could go on…
