Children and God
Back in the 1960s, before we had CD players and another such apparatus, I was contracted to produce a children's vinyl record. One side of that record had several kids talking about the concept of God in their lives.
The most important lesson I learned was that children can understand God in biological, physical terms, but could not not deal in the concept of God. The idea of God to exist in the child's mind has to be fleshed out with very specific characteristics. When I asked the boys, “What does God look like?”, the first answer was 5 foot 8 1/2 inches. A couple of rows back another voice insisted, five eleven!
It turned out that mothers are the agencies of God's wrath, if you did something wrong. No television for a week´enthroned by your mother very easily in punishment for a sin
In the 1980s, armed this time with cameras, I returned to check into the belief system of children. This time, I questioned their assumption God was a man and then listened to an eight-year-old who visited heaven every afternoon.
I encourage those who are reading this to engage in this discussion with your children and grandchildren, you'll be surprised. I only ask if you go on that journey always be respectful.
